About Us

Heavy Soul was set up by Barney Douglas in 2015, after he spent a number of years working as the Video Producer for the England cricket team. Our latest film "McEnroe" had its world premiere in June 2022 at Tribeca Film Festival in New York, and its international premiere took place at Sheffield Doc Fest in the UK. It has since screened at the New Zealand Film Festival and heads to Australia in October. "McEnroe" was released theatrically in the UK by Universal Pictures & Dogwoof, by Showtime in the US, and Canal+ in France.

Heavy Soul Films began with the release of indie documentary "Warriors" in UK cinemas back in 2015, which won the International Sport & Peace Jury Award in Monaco, and was nominated for two One World Media Awards. It told the story of Maasai men who used sport to fight against FGM in their village. It was selected for the prestigious United Nations cinema program, showing in Brussels, New York & Beirut, and was broadcast in a number of countries via the Sundance Channel, including the US, Japan and Sweden. We have since produced the critically acclaimed "The Edge" (2019), which tackled mental health in the English cricket team during their rise (and fall) in the world rankings. It was nominated for a British Sports Journalism Award and premiered on BBC2, before streaming on Amazon Prime. For the next two years it is available on the BBC iPlayer. We are currently in development on our fourth feature doc, "Ark".

Heavy Soul look to make character-driven documentaries, promos, and archive based productions. We look for the humanity in every story. We have extensive experience filming across the globe, including Russia, Kenya, Argentina, Mexico, Europe, Japan, The United States and the Caribbean. We have worked with high profile talent as well as smaller, more intimate stories. We're always on the lookout for the next great feature doc!
